Blogs helping Indian Marketers

This piece in The Economic Times today made an interesting read. It says:

“BLOG POSTS are now finding their way into the marketing strategies of motorcycle makers. What started as platforms to share passions and frustrations of bikers are now being tracked by corporates to fine-tune their offerings. Instead of tedious market surveys and data crunching, companies now get reviews within hours of product launch, courtesy blogs.”

Delighted to note that marketers are beginning to understand the value of blogs & social media and are using them for immediate, true feedback instead? of commissioned research that’s not just time-consuming but also expensive (and often inaccurate?)
I just changed my car for a new one and relied heavily on blog posts, forum discussions, word-of-mouth (company brochures helped me decide the colour, nothing more :) ).
In my opinion, however, the loop will not be complete until we put the customer in the center and then surround him/her with peer reviews, expert opinion and marketer’s inputs (the last bit is TOTALLY missing today). It is the logical next step and we are hoping to participate in that space.
I was with a marketer friend last week and tried to partly address concerns/ reservations she had about competition using a marketer’s blog to malign the brand. A couple of points we spoke about, a couple I am adding now:

  1. The blogosphere is quite fair and transparent and real users, if happy with your brand, will counter any biased/ malicious campaign with true feedback.
  2. Competition is anyway not going to wait for you to set-up your blog before they start their campaign to malign, if that was the intent
  3. Out-of-the-ordinary negative comments that go against what is the majority view, may not cut ice with the customer, s/he is intelligent enough to make an educated decision

Exciting times ahead.

  • Fully agree Rajesh. I also agree with Marryam's comments.
However, since brands and sentiments are measured taking large numbers of social media elements, I believe the wheat and chaff will automatically be sorted out and the true picture will emerge accurately.
  • Blogs are becoming popular in india.
  • Payeng: The journalist who wrote the story may not have been aware of your blog. Why don't you write to her/ him and I am sure they will think of speaking with you the next time they are writing a similar story.
    Thanks for dropping by.
    Cheers.

  • Being one of the very few Indians who keeps a blog specifically which covers the Indian 2Wheeler Industry, here is my opinion..
The sites mentioned in the ET Article "Blogs Boost Bike Sales" are..
    Xbhp.com
    Mouthshut.com
    Bikenomads.com
    Bajajpulsar.org and
Yahoo groups for Royal Enfield, Hero Honda Karizma group and TVS Apache
None of the above are "Blogs". They are either Discussion Forums or the Online Groups.
On reading the ET article I was hoping to see my blog, Indian2Wheels.Blogspot.Com being mentioned in the article.
The author of the article probably thinks "internet forums" and "online groups" are "Blogs"
  • You are right Vinay. Are you a marketer too?
  • Vinay
hi, in the ever changing times the ways and modes of scocial interactions are also changing. Blog is result of one of such changes and surely would be very effective in times to come. Sooner we realise the benefits better for us as marketers, writers or product developers.
  • Blogging is becoming a major way to influence public opinion, and Bloggers are becoming Opinion Leaders. Blogging has become a battle ground for a lot of big companies mentioned in business week and online-pr's blog. I think there are exciting times for Blogging in the future.

  • Hi Rahul,
There are several, but no one consolidated place. Most motoring magazines and websites have forums - BS does and so do many others. Also see mouthshut.com.
    Check out presstalk.blogspot.com
Actually if you ask me you should get several results on just a google search. Check the links on this post:

Hi Rajesh. Which blogs did you use to decide your car. I cant seem to find any for consumer reviews on cars and durables, using google search ?? Enjoy!...Rahul
  • This example may be small, but yet it is powerful. The same can reciprocated to other industries, corporates, products, brands too. I think we should not the ignore the influence of social media - like blogs, and online communities.
  • Hi Marryam. Thanks for dropping by...
I understand your concerns about accountability and am therefore hoping that the real experts would adopt the new medium/s to bring the sane, objective voice on the blogosphere.
My experience on the blogosphere about objectivity has been that it is a 'fair' world - someone may post something negative, someone will counter it - if they believe otherwise.
Either which ways marketers are going to get impacted (they already are being) and therefore a need to understand and accordingly plan for it...
Do keep sharing your thoughts Marryam...
    Cheers.

Rajesh, I don't quite share your enthusiasm for blogs. There is just no accountability. And I genuinely don't think we Indians are a very objective lot anyway. We like to criticise without reason because this makes a lot of us feel superior, and we hate to praise for the same reason. However, good luck to you...
