10 Commandments for being a Facebook celebrity

I have been intently listening to many of the offline conversations around me, and have been quite fascinated how the pressure of putting our ‘best face forward’ on Facebook is playing up in our lives.
It’s a space which has little place for the reserved and the shy; a dynamic tabloid replete with ‘Beautiful People’ hounded by a painstakingly self-seeded network of paparazzi.
Belonging and self esteem have been recognized as the key human needs since time immemorial. As the Wikipedia note on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs says -
All humans have a need to be respected and to have self-esteem and self-respect. Also known as the belonging need, esteem presents the normal human desire to be accepted and valued by others. People need to engage themselves to gain recognition and have an activity or activities that give the person a sense of contribution, to feel accepted and self-valued, be it in a profession or hobby. Imbalances at this level can result in low self-esteem or an inferiority complex.
Facebook is a great platform to gain recognition and be accepted. However, there is an unspoken code of conduct that helps to cover the recognition ground rapidly.

Here are a few commandments that will hold you in good stead:

  1. Thou shall always have a smile on your face – real life may be about difficult issues as parents disapproving of your girlfriend/ not having a job or getting admission in a good college etc, but on Facebook you MUST be seen as happy. Why? If reality is perception and if you can influence that perception, by showcasing your best then you can change your reality. Well almost.
  2. Thou shall ‘Untag’ any photograph that may make thy look short, fat or ‘uncool’ – there are several dementors prying around, to catch you in your non-Julia Roberts moment and bring it to everyone else’s notice by pressing the ‘like’ button. Steer clear!
  3. Thou shall never repeat a dress at any social gathering – well this one may imply additional financial burdens but then that’s a small price to pay for being the Paris Hilton of your Facebook network. Wearing the same outfit on two occasions captured on the network can be a REALLY big fashion faux pas. Watch out!
  4. Thou shall keep everyone informed of your current relationship status – one of the Facebook best practices is to have your beau feature in your profile photograph. There are also several relationship options to choose from – intelligent usage of this feature can also enable you to find (or even dump) a partner
  5. Thou must upload your kindergarten photographs – so what if you don’t exactly look like a dream anymore? You definitely have those really cute pictures of you as a 2 yr old. They are also great conversation starters. If there is nothing from the present life worthy of generating interest, past is certainly worth a try!

Since brevity is the soul of wit, and user-generated content that of social media, I have left the scope for other 5 commandments to be generated from you dear reader and others of your ilk. :)
Do share your thoughts.
Cheers.

Haha, this is great! The commandment of not re-wearing any ensemble is so true! Don't want to look like we have only a few 'going-out' dresses ;) I think another commandment too is changing your default picture at least once every week along with your status' and your facebook layout . Thanks for sharing!
  • This is not a new phenomenon and organisations have a lot of experience at their disposal to deal with this 'brand stalking'.

    Hi Jess,
We are all guilty on one or the other counts :) If you notice the post ends by saying that the other 5 commandments would best come from readers as you. There are 2 interesting commandments that readers have shared in comments, so we stand at 7. If you have an interesting observation/commandment to share that will be great. Thanks.Cheers.
  • Jess
But the title says 10 commandments yet there are only 5. Either more commandments needed or title needs to change.
  • Jess
    I am guilty. #2 and #5

Good work , sites like facebook are only a medium to potray urself in the best way(though you may be exactly opposite of what you appear to be on facebook) ,listen good things and say good things and poke in each others life.
  • Amita
Hi Razia, yes ironical isnt it :)
  • Razia Kuvale
This is so true! Also many people like the fact that they are Facebook friends with someone even if they don't talk in real life! The greater the number of friends, the more social I am!
  • Amita
@slippy yes, very very important to mantain the "cool" quotient :)
    @rekha Thank you :)
  • rekha
    You write so well !!
    Hugs :)
  • Slippy
Thou shall accept all Zinga game requests, namely, farmville, cafe world et al from your closest friends, relatives lest you risk getting hate mails from them about how 'uncool' you and your real life is! Some would even point out that you are outdated.
  • Amita
Hi Shrey, yeah so true.FB thy second name is mutual admiration club.
  • Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself (or pretend to)... it is a simple give and take game. If you do not appreciate others, they won't appreciate you... the 'LIKE' button is there to help you ;) however, be careful not to over do it as there is a thin line between a Facebook celebrity and a wannabe
  • Amita
Hey Yuvika, good one. Yes, there is serious competition to news channels out there :)
  • Amita
Hi Aanchal, thanks! Would love to hear one from you :)
  • Aanchal
This is so true... best part- the simplest of observations :)
  • Great job Amita..u always rock!
    How about
Thou shall be the first to post thy views about any new breaking news, product launch or movie release so that thou art established as the intellecuarati on FB :)

    nice article
  • The metrics for evaluating a social media program should depend on the objective of the program ;-)
I see 4 types of objectives:
1- Influencing a target community and get influencers talk about you:
    - we measure that with the number of influencers in the community that you can reach in FB or LinkedIn, and the number of direct references to your blog from bloggers in that community
    2- Learn/Crowdsource ideas/Innovate
    - we measure the number of article from the community flaged as valuable by the client team
    3- Lead generation.
    - very simple, how many qualified lead resulting from buzz, outreach and ad campaigns on social media outlet
    4- Branding, sentiment analysis
    - overall share of voice (conversations mentioning your brand/product and services / overall number of conversations).
    -% of positive comments.
Hope this helps and thaks for your post
  • Shefaly : Glad that you agree and acknowledge. Yes, such stalking is not a new phenomenon and but natural that social media, with its increasing impact & viral nature, gets adopted too. Like I said, I was reached out to for advise on 3 occasions this year, so dealing vis-a-vis social media usage for the purpose and the viral impact is NEW.
Mommy Bloggers/ Mortin - I believe is was a bonafide case of consumer outcry, no malintent visible...to me.
Greenpeace - I don't agree with their methods too :)
    Cheers
    Rajesh
  • This is not a new phenomenon and organisations have a lot of experience at their disposal to deal with this 'brand stalking'.
Greenpeace for instance has been an eco-terrorist organisation for years (yes, I know that is not a popularly held opinion but their methods aren't always above board) but companies which are the targets engage at various levels over various issues with Greenpeace.
As for mommy bloggers being that brigade: well I once wrote a series of posts on typologies. I referred to an OFCOM report that calls Mom bloggers 'attention seekers'. It must have been my highest traffic day because on angry mom blogger posted a link to my article on some blog and then hundreds came. Saying nothing of value just angry at the characterisation and to many, I had to clarify that it is not _my_ characterisation but the UK Telecoms Regulator's. Not that it concerned anyone. I finally wrote a tweet saying 'Help mom bloggers are ganging up on me' and then one left me a comment, relax, we are not but the barrage stopped. Companies, I agree, may have more to lose but I think mala fide intent has to be proven, not assumed.
  • in addition to WATBlog, Bangalore Mirror also has tie ups with HolidayIQ and itwofs.com for weekend getaways and music reviews content respectively...
  • Rajiv - Brilliant. I expect this to become a mainstream trend this year. Cheers
    Rajesh
  • Just wanted to add WATBlog has a tie up with Bangalore Mirror where we power their iTech page since almost a year now.
  • In a shocking and a rather bizarre development, several dozen (I suspect
200 odd comments) on the blog have disappeared. We are not sure if there
was a breach but the loss is beyond words. There is no way to ascertain
what is gone from where. Extremely disappointing.
